Tortured by cockroaches: gigantic flying roaches force woman from north of China to quit job i
The story of a woman who quit her job in southern China to escape the region’s “giant flying” cockroaches has resonated with many people on mainland social media.
The woman, nicknamed Xiaomin, who is originally from northern China’s Inner Mongolia region, had been working in Guangzhou for three years.
According to her profile on the popular social media platform Xiaohongshu, Xiaomin specialises in video editing and graphic design.
In a widely circulated video by Jingwei Video, Xiaomin revealed that she had never seen cockroaches until she moved to the capital of Guangdong province in southern China three years ago.
“The cockroaches here are gigantic, and they can even fly,” she said.

In another post shared on Xiaohongshu on July 14, Xiaomin illustrated her desperate struggle against the insects with a picture of door gaps tightly stuffed with brochures and magazines to keep the cockroaches at bay.
“Keeping the room clean doesn’t work, sealing cracks and windows doesn’t work, and all kinds of pesticides are useless,” she said.
“Now I’m in a panic just to type the word ‘cockroach’ because it triggers an emoji of the insect. I get scared just looking at the emoji.”
Xiaomin’s phobia for the cockroaches of Guangzhou came on top of her difficulty in adapting to the local food and climate and coping with the pressures of life and work.
“I have faced so many pressures without shedding a tear, but now I feel helpless and often burst into tears. I can grit my teeth and overcome any difficulties, but this instinctive fear cannot be alleviated even a little bit,” she said.

All the pressures had led to her make plans to resign from her job, but being “tortured” by the cockroaches was the last straw.
“I just want to buy a plane ticket and get out now,” she said.
Her story has resonated online with one person saying: “I heard that if there’s one cockroach in the house, there will be countless, they just keep coming. It never ends.”
“Maybe you will know how to deal with them after beating them several times. I used to even be afraid of butterflies when I was in the north, but now I can see a cockroach flying in my house and not bat an eyelid,” another added.
